The Principle

Pros sound fluid because they practice one thing: the transitions.

The transition in between is what counts.

Why ChordTrainer

Practice that actually works

Most musicians practice evenly. But your weak spots lie in very specific transitions. ChordTrainer finds them.

Reaction time

Every transition, down to the millisecond.

After each round, you see which transitions took the longest. One tap loads the weakest ones as a practice sequence — no guesswork about where to spend your time.

Voice Leading

Fewer jumps, smoother playing.

ChordTrainer calculates the inversion with the shortest finger distance for every change. Less hand movement, fewer mistakes, more professional sound.

Adaptive

A trainer that knows your history.

Adaptive mode analyzes your entire practice history and automatically generates sequences targeting your weakest transitions.

Deep Dive

What are inversions — and why do they change everything?

The same C major chord sounds different depending on which note is in the bass. Master inversions and you'll play more fluidly with less hand movement.

Three times C major — three different feels

Root position, 1st inversion, 2nd inversion — all three are technically C major. But in practice, they determine how far your hand has to jump between two chords.

ChordTrainer automatically calculates the optimal inversion for every chord change, so your fingers always take the shortest path. That's Voice Leading — the secret behind the smooth playing of professional pianists.

On the built-in keyboard display, you can see in real time which inversion is active and which keys to press.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a MIDI keyboard?
No. Listening to chords, building sequences and exploring the circle of fifths works without any keyboard. In practice mode, ChordTrainer recognizes your chords either via a MIDI keyboard (USB or Bluetooth, no drivers) — or through the microphone, right at your acoustic piano. MIDI detection is the most precise.
Which keyboards are supported?
All USB MIDI keyboards that are class-compliant (virtually all consumer models: Arturia, Novation, Akai, Roland, Korg, Native Instruments, and many more). Plus all Bluetooth MIDI keyboards — pair them directly in the settings.
What are chord inversions?
An inversion is the same combination of notes in a chord with a different note in the bass. C major in root position has C in the bass — in the 1st inversion E is in the bass, in the 2nd it's G. Using inversions strategically means less hand movement and a more professional sound. ChordTrainer displays all inversions on the keyboard and selects the optimal one automatically.
What makes ChordTrainer different from other music apps?
Most apps show you what chords look like. ChordTrainer trains how fast you switch between them — and measures it. Reaction time tracking per transition, automatic detection of your weakest changes, Voice Leading, and an adaptive mode that learns from your practice history.
Does the app work offline?
Fully. No internet connection required. All data is stored locally on your device. iCloud sync is optional and runs through Apple's infrastructure.
Which devices does ChordTrainer run on?
macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later, iOS 17 or later, iPadOS 17 or later. One purchase covers all your Apple devices with the same Apple ID (Family Sharing supported).
Is there a subscription?
You have a choice: Pro is available as a monthly or yearly subscription, or as a one-time Lifetime purchase (€29.99) that lasts forever and includes all future updates. Existing Pro buyers automatically get Lifetime access.
Can I send MIDI data to other apps?
Yes. ChordTrainer appears as a virtual MIDI output on your system. Any DAW (Logic, Ableton, GarageBand, etc.) can subscribe to this input and receive the played chords as MIDI notes.
How do I contact support?
By email: aschuetz90@googlemail.com. You'll typically receive a reply within 24 hours.
Is Pro really worth it?
The free version is great for trying things out. But if you're serious about improving, you need the adaptive mode and statistics charts. For less than the price of a piano lesson, you get a tool you'll use for years — either via subscription or as a one-time Lifetime purchase.
